By Edward Matulanya

Here  are the early life, Religious life, Spirituality, virtues, Legacy, prayer, death and canonization of Saint Alphonsus Rodríguez (1532 – 1617).

Feast Day: October 31

Early Life

Saint Alphonsus Rodríguez was born in Segovia, Spain, on July 25, 1532 (some sources record 1533). His father was a wool merchant who often hosted Saint Peter Faber, one of the early companions of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Faber prepared young Alphonsus for his First Communion (Jesuit.org.sg, 2023).

After his father’s death, Alphonsus left formal studies to help manage the family business. At 26, he married María Suárez, and the couple had three children. Within a few years, his wife and all three children died, leaving him devastated (Diocese of Boise, 2024). Seeking a deeper purpose, he sold his business and desired to join the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). However, he was initially refused because of his age, health, and lack of education (Catholic.com, 2024).

Religious Life

At around 38 years old, Alphonsus was finally accepted into the Jesuits as a lay brother on January 31, 1571 (Wikipedia, 2024). Assigned to the Jesuit College in Palma de Mallorca, he served as a porter for 46 years (Jesuit.org.sg, 2023). His duties included greeting visitors, delivering messages, and distributing alms. Yet, he transformed these humble acts into profound expressions of holiness.

He greeted each knock at the door with the words, “I’m coming, Lord,” recognizing Christ in everyone he served (Catholic Stewardship, 2024). Alphonsus was known for his deep prayer life, simplicity, and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

He also became a spiritual mentor; notably, Saint Peter Claver, inspired by Alphonsus’ counsel, volunteered to serve enslaved Africans in South America (Wikipedia, 2024).

Spirituality and Virtues

Alphonsus’ spirituality centered on humility, obedience, and continual prayer. His life exemplifies the sanctity of ordinary service—doing daily tasks with extraordinary love.

He practiced mortification and simplicity, devoting himself to the rosary and the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Catholic.com, 2024). He once said:

> “Knowing one’s weakness does not discourage but rather strengthens one’s efforts, for it makes one put all trust in God.” (Jesuits Global, 2023).

Death and Canonization

Saint Alphonsus Rodríguez died on October 31, 1617, in Palma de Mallorca. He was declared Venerable in 1626, Beatified in 1825, and Canonized on January 15, 1888, by Pope Leo XIII (Catholic.com, 2024). His feast day is celebrated on October 31 throughout the Catholic world.

He is the patron saint of Jesuit brothers and of doorkeepers/porters, representing holiness through humble, consistent service (Jesuits.org, 2024).

Legacy

Saint Alphonsus reminds the faithful that sainthood is not reserved for priests, scholars, or visionaries—but can be achieved through fidelity in everyday life. His quiet dedication demonstrates that every task, done with love and devotion, becomes an offering to God.

In a modern culture that values visibility and success, Alphonsus’ hidden life testifies that true greatness lies in faithful service and seeing Christ in all people.

ONE GOD

One God By Edward Matulanya   Here’s a clear explanation of One God according to the Roman Catholic Church, as explained by the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) and the Holy Bible. The Roman Catholic Church teaches that there is one, living, and true God, the Creator of all things, who is eternal, all-powerful, all-knowing, and present everywhere. God is one in essence (nature) but exists as a Trinity of Persons; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This mystery of one divine substance in three Persons does not divide God, but reveals His inner life of perfect unity and love. According to Catechism of the Catholic Church, (CCC 200) “There is but one God: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, a Trinity of one substance.” Also, (CCC 201) “To Israel, his chosen, God revealed himself as the only One: ‘Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD…’ (Dt 6:4).”Further more, (CCC 253) “The Trinity is One. We do not confess three Gods, but one God in three Persons, the ‘consubstan...
