Overview of the Feast of Basilica of Saint John Lateran The Feast of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran commemorates the consecration of the Archbasilica of the Most Holy Savior and of Saints John the Baptist and the Evangelist, commonly known as St. John Lateran. This basilica is regarded as the cathedral church of the Bishop of Rome, and therefore holds the title “Mother and Head of All Churches in the City and the World” (Omnium urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput), therefore the Church celebrates its' feast Universally (Catholic Encyclopedia, 1910).
