Marian apparition at Guadalupe By Edward Matulanya Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Virgin Mary who appeared in 1531 to St. Juan Diego in Mexico, patroness of the Americas and a beloved symbol of faith in the Roman Catholic Church. 1. Introduction Our Lady of Guadalupe (Mexico, 1531) appeared to Juan Diego, an indigenous Chichimeca man who had recently converted to Christianity (Anderson, 1997; Vatican News, 2018). The Apparition occured at Tepeyac Hill, near Mexico City, Mexico (Poole, 2004). The appreciation occured from December 9 to December 12, 1531 (Vatican News, 2018). 2. First Appearance The first apparition occured on December 9, 1531. Mary appeared as a young, radiant woman with mestizo features, wearing a rose-colored mantle with stars. She spoke in Nahuatl, the language of the indigenous people, and asked Juan Diego to request the construction of a church on the site (Anderson, 1997). 3.
