  Gerard Sagredo By Edward Matulanya Birth and Origin: Gerard Sagredo was born around 980 in Venice, Italy, into a noble family (some sources associate him with the Morosini or Sagredo families).  Early Life and Monastic Life of Saint  Gerard Sagredo As a young man, he entered the Benedictine monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. He later served as abbot and eventually left monastery leadership to live more contemplatively, including undertaking pilgrimage.  Mission and Episcopal Service of Saint Gerard Sagredo Gerard was invited by King Saint Stephen I of Hungary to work in evangelization. He became tutor to Prince Emeric (Stephen’s son). He was appointed the first Bishop of Csanád (in the Kingdom of Hungary) around 1030-1035.
