Religious life & mission: She entered the Sisters of Providence of Ruillé-sur-Loir (France) and, in 1840, led a small band of sisters to the Indiana frontier at the invitation of the bishop of Vincennes. There she founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods and established schools, charitable works, and a motherhouse.
