On 12 October 1717, three Brazilian fishermen—Domingos Garcia, Filipe Pedroso, and João Alves—pulled from the Paraíba River the broken pieces of a small clay statue of the Virgin Mary. Shortly afterward, their nets were filled with an abundant catch, which the faithful regarded as a miraculous sign (Vatican News, n.d.). This image, later named Our Lady of the Appeared Conception or Our Lady Aparecida, became the center of a growing devotion throughout Brazil.
By the 18th century, a chapel and then larger churches were built to accommodate the pilgrims who attributed many miracles to the Virgin's intercession. In 1904, Pope Pius X authorized a canonical coronation of the image, and in 1930, Pope Pius XI declared Our Lady Aparecida the Patroness of Brazil (Vatican News, n.d.). The basilica in Aparecida is now one of the largest Marian shrines in the world, and the feast of Our Lady of Aparecida on 12 October is a national holiday in Brazil (Marie de Nazareth, n.d.).
2. Saint Edwin of Northumbria
Saint Edwin was born around 585 CE as the son of King Ælle of Deira. After years of exile due to rivalries in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, Edwin gained the throne of Northumbria in 616 CE (Catholic Encyclopedia, 1909/2023). His reign marked a significant turning point for Christianity in northern England.
Through the influence of his Christian queen, Æthelburg of Kent, and the missionary efforts of Saint Paulinus, Edwin converted to Christianity and encouraged its spread in his kingdom (Catholic Encyclopedia, 1909/2023). He supported the Church’s establishment in York and fostered missionary activity among his people. Edwin was killed in battle on 12 October 632 or 633 CE, fighting against Penda of Mercia and Cadwallon of Gwynedd. He was subsequently venerated as a saint and martyr, and his feast day is celebrated on 12 October (Annunciation Catholic Albemarle, 2022).
