On 21 September, the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist.

Saint Matthew is one of the Twelve Apostles and traditionally recognized as the author of the Gospel according to Matthew.
Early life of Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist
Saint Matthew is the former tax collector called by Jesus to follow Him (cf. Matthew 9:9). He Proclaimed the Good News and bore witness to Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. “As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and followed him” (Matthew 9:9). Matthew is also called Levi Mark 2:13–17; Luke 5:27–32).
Matthew was one among the Twelve Apostles (Matthew 10:2–4). Names Matthew as present in the upper room after Jesus’ Ascension (Acts 1:13) .
Legacy of Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist
Early Church tradition identifies Matthew as the author of the Gospel bearing his name, though the text itself is anonymous. His Gospel presents Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy
