Andrew and Companions By Edward Matulanya On 20 September, the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of Saints Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang, and Companions, who are collectively honored as the Korean Martyrs. Andrew Kim Taegon was the first native Korean Catholic priest. and Paul Chong Hasang was a lay catechist and leader. They, along with 101 other companions (priests, religious, and laypeople), were martyred in Korea during persecutions between 1839 and 1867. Pope John Paul II canonized them on May 6, 1984.
